In line with the recommendations of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) Review Taskforce, a number of changes were made to the Medicare items for thoracic medicine on 1 November 2018.

The changes include:

new and revised items for sleep study services to ensure patients with proven sleep disorders are better identified and more appropriately managed;
enhanced quality requirements for spirometry with a new higher-rebated item to incentivise the use of well performed spirometry in primary care;
new eligibility criteria for complex respiratory tests, including the introduction of new items to reflect the level of the complexity of these tests.
